That day was truly special - I had carefully selected the most beautiful Ao Dai, freshly delivered from my family in Vietnam. As is typical of many Vietnamese women, I always wear áo dài on important occasions.
As I walked along the familiar streets towards the Brisbane City Hall, my heart was filled with excitement and anticipation. The Ao Dai I wore was adorned with vibrant colors of yellow and green, with a charming depiction of Hanoi's old quarter, making me stand out amidst the bustling crowd. With a smile on my face, I felt a sense of pride knowing that I was bringing a piece of Vietnam's culture to this new land, elegant and refined yet remarkably distinct.
On that day, I was to take the oath and officially become an Australian citizen.
Australia is a multicultural country that encourages all its citizens to celebrate their own cultural heritage. By wearing the Ao Dai at this momentous occasion, I felt proud to represent my Vietnamese heritage, while also contributing to the rich diversity of Australian culture.
And then came the unexpected surprise, a moment that I will always cherish. After the ceremony, the mayor was waiting by the door, taking commemorative photos with each family. When it was our turn, he looked at my áo dài and exclaimed, "Your outfit is stunning! How clever of you to choose traditional colors of Australia and wear them with your Ao Dai!" "Oh my goodness! Thank you for noticing the exquisite combination!" I replied with a beaming smile.
I didn't dare take credit for that clever choice - it was the mayor who recognized the beauty of the blending of cultures. But I understand that when we pour our hearts into something, meaningful moments like these will come to pass. And I, for one, have a deep love for both Vietnam and Australia, and for the graceful elegance of the Ao Dai.
